This means for the remainder of us, if we would like to take our bikes on vacation or out into the outback we must have some kind of bike rack to fit to our car.
There are 4 principal categories of bike racks to select from.
These are: Roof racks. Strap-on tailgate racks. Towing hitch racks and the racks that mount in the load bed of a pick up lorry. Each type has its own individual pros and downsides so it's very important that you consider about exactly how you're going to be using your cycle rack before deciding on the type to purchase.
Strap-on racks
Strap-on racks are the least expensive types you will find. They are straightforward racks that sit up against the rear of the automobile and are attached by polyester straps with hooks that hook on to the upper and bottom edges of the rear hatch. Strap-on cycle racks are recommended to be used for fairly short outings, as the straps can sometimes work slack on longer trips. Frequently your back registration plate will be hidden by this type of cycle rack so a light board will be required to stay within the local laws. If you don't already have a towing socket on your vehicle, having one being installed will raise up your all-in costs for the rack. One issue with this type of rack is that the bikes can sometimes cause damage to the auto's panels or paintwork. Also, the strap fixings can all too easily mark the finish right under the points of contact.
Roof-mounted racks
These fix to standard roof rails. Some trucks have long rails onto which you can fit two cross bars but on other automobiles you will have to purchase a new roof rack and bike carrying fittings. Most autos can carry 2 bikes and lots up to 4 this way. This kind of rack is pretty secure and the bikes can be locked onto the rack very simply. Depending on the height of your vehicle, getting the bike on and off the rack could be a struggle especially if you aren't extremely tall or strong. Having the bikes up there in the wind may also cause lots of drag, augmenting your fuel consumption.
Tow-hitch mounted racks
Towing hitch mounted racks are extraordinarily robust and some will load up to six machines. They are perfect if you already have a towing fitting. If you do not, you will have to allow for the added expense of getting one fitted. These racks are at an easy low working height and consequently are so easy to load and unload. Like the strap-on variety, they can block the sight line to your license plate so be conscious of that fact. Some are equipped with a 'swing away' feature that permits you to operate the rear hatch even with your bikes on board. Some even let you tow a trailer at the same time.
Wagon bed racks
These are nice if you already own a pickup wagon. The cycle rack is fitted in the truck bed just to the rear of the cab and the bikes fit simply onto the rack. They are terribly safe, secure and easy to fit and remove bikes. They don't obscure lights or add to fuel consumption and so are perfect in many ways but of use if you own a truck!
