A Guide To Taking The Correct Fish Oil Dosage

Ever wondered why people comment on how important it is to gain enough fish oil but no one really says what the correct fish oil dosage is? The thing is: the amount of fish oil that a person should take depends on a lot of variables. Some of these variables include: the person?s current dietary needs, underlying medical condition, health level, other supplements taken, etc.

First of all, we will limit this discussion to ultra refined fish oil supplements. As you might now, there are many kinds and brands of these aforementioned dietary supplements. However, the ultra refined variety is always a cut above the rest.

These have the purest forms of fish oils in the market, which makes the occurrence of contaminants at the barest minimum. Contaminants, in this regard, are actually other minerals that usually come with the extraction of fish oils from its source. The most common of these minerals are Vitamin A and mercury.

Taken individually, both Vitamin A and mercury may be good for the body? but only in very small doses. Fish oils are usually concentrated in such a way that these can be packed in soft gels, which could then be easily ingested and incorporated into the bloodstream. Unfortunately, any mineral within the fish oils are also concentrated which may prove to be dangerous to one?s health.

As such, a person can take in organic and natural fish oil simply through food. For people who eat fat-rich fish like mackerel, salmon and tuna for about 2 portions (or approximately the size of 2 slices of bread) per week, omega3 supplements should be at the minimum. One gram per day is enough to promote and sustain the person?s well-being in this regard.

However, for other people who may not be getting enough fish in their diets, 2 grams of ultra refined fish oils daily is the norm. For people who may be having problems balancing their cholesterol level, or those with existing heart-related medical conditions, the dosage should be higher than normal. About 3 to 4 grams per day is recommendable, although some individuals may be prescribed up to 8 grams per day.

Healthy individuals who may be looking for ways to improve their cognitive skills may increase their fish oil dosages slightly. 1 to 2 additional grams during study time may help sharpen memory skills.

Pregnant women and their unborn child could benefit from 1 to 2 grams of ultra refined fish oils as well. However, it is still important to ask the advice of the health care provider as to the recommended supplement and dosage, especially during the first 6 months of the pregnancy. This is to ensure that both mother and baby remain healthy.

On the other hand, lactating mothers are sometimes recommended to take as much as 7 grams of fish oils per day. But children below the age of 12 must be given omega 3 supplements only if the health care provider recommends so.

So in effect, there is really no universal recommendation for fish oil dosage. Although high levels of ultra refined omega 3 oils may only have positive impacts on your overall health, other kinds of omega 3 supplements may not. The best way to know just how much ultra refined fish oil you should be taking is to simply ask your health care provider for a prescription ? or at the very least, your dosage limit for one day.

With this information in hand, scan through the specifications of omega 3 products of various vendors, their benefits, any shortcomings and other usage parameters. Try to ascertain whether the claims are just hype or is there any truth in it. This will help you in deciding on the correct dosage to be administered and also will help in timely health protection for you and your family.
