Transcendental Meditation

Transcendental Meditation or TM, was a technique of meditation devised by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in 1958. It is practiced for twenty minutes twice a day while sitting quietly with one’s eyes closed. It involves the repetition of a mantra and is stated to require neither contemplation nor concentration.

Transcendental Meditation became popularized internationally during the 1960s when the famous British band The Beatles became enthusiasts of the technique, eventually going to India to reside with Maharishi Mahesh Yoga for some days at his ashram in the Himalayas.

Although today when most people use the term “transcendental meditation” they are speaking of the form described above, the word transcendental means “preeminent or supreme”, or “lying beyond ordinary perception”, and the word “meditation” means “continuous and profound contemplation or musing on a subject in a deep manner”. Therefore generally speaking, in its essence, “transcendental meditation” is any type of contemplation on a substance beyond ordinary perception.

For those interested in taking up the trademarked form of transcendental meditation there are many centers around the world where such an interest can be facilitated. There are also several websites online where you can obtain information and tips on this particular technique.

As with any form of meditation or daily practice, the most important ingredients come from your side; interest, enthusiasm, dedication and patience.
