Irvingia was recently outed as a potential weight loss supplement after a study involving a few hundred overweight and obese volunteers (available for read at the National Institutes for Health archives) was conducted in Cameroon. The study showed that participants that were supplementing their diet with Irvingia through capsules of processed Irvingia seed were able to lose anywhere between two to five percent of their body mass compared to those taking a placebo. When this study was published, there was little hesitation in declaring Irvingia the new weight loss megafruit.
Supplementing your diet with Irvingia is no different than taking any other supplement. The studies have recommended taking capsules of Irvingia extract twice daily to ensure that you're getting adequate amounts of the active ingredients in the extract to have an effect on your weight loss. Also worth noting is that while weight loss supplements almost always work better with dietary changes and exercise, the Cameroonians in the study did virtually nothing to change their diet and did not partake in additional exercise. It is expected that a new study currently being performed with participants from the US and Canada which includes dietary changes to a healthier diet and regular exercise will show even greater weight loss benefits.
So - will Irvingia work for you? No one can answer this as everyone's body reacts differently to every food or supplement you eat. However, if weight loss is your goal and you're thinking about trying something new, Irvingia may be able to give you the kick start you need. Good luck!
