Cancer research is basically researching on cancer with the aim to learn more about the disease. Research may be done to establish the causes, develop ways of prevention, diagnosis, treatment as well as a cure. Research on the disease may for example touch on an area such as epidemiology. A researcher may also perform clinical tests to compare the various ways of cancer treatment. Some of these treatment methods are surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy and hormonal therapy. Other treatment methods are immunotherapy and gene therapy

Often when experts do research on the role of genes in the development of cancer, they use the mouse as a mammalian model to learn more about the subject. A cancer research on tumor suppressor genes equips one with proper knowledge on tumor progression as well as proper treatment methods. This is crucial because the role of a certain gene in cancer progression may vary depending on the stage of the disease and the type of cancer.

Research is also ongoing anti-cancer vaccine. This experiment was performed on rats. It was done by extracting some cancer cells from a tumor and exposing them to UV rays for 24 hours. They were then injected back into a rat and it was successful
