It seems that with all that modern advertising, with its colourful and subliminal messages, we have reduced the ability to think and take action about the causes of our problems. I am not just talking about obesity, because this seems to be a similar pattern with all the problems that we have to face as human beings. There is no pill, diet or natural remedy that can replace your will power, and that wonder of the mind which is to meditate about our own lives. Using our own mental power to lose weight and maintain it is a very complicated challenge, but also a wonderful adventure that will give us great confidence in our character, self-esteem and courage to move forward with our lives.

Let us be honest with ourselves. Nobody has to explain us how to lose weight and maintain it. We know what we must do, and the most serious problem is that we betray us with our excuses, procrastination and any kind of excuses. We can start a very placid physical activity such as walking 20 minutes per day. If you live in a small town a trick that works, is to walk back home from work every day. There is a very old exercise to train the will, which is carrying out a daily task that we dislike. In this way our power is developed, and we can use it as we want.

Another trick to help us is to remember that the mind always acts by substitution. We can't suppress the desire to eat thinking about not eating. We must replace the desire to eat with a higher goal. For example, remember those days just a few years ago when you were healthy and slim, look at those pictures going to the beach, or plan seriously the possibility of a new beginning with sports. All this is a good support to control the desire to eat excessively. And it works.
