Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) involves anxiety that is inhibiting and relentless. It involves high-level anxiety and it is at a point that is an interference to normal activities. It makes relaxation impossible and your normal life becomes so difficult.

With this level of anxiety you take the simple discussions of difficulties and bear the burden of those thoughts all day long, where as others would have let the thought go immediately. You become prisoner to your own thoughts.

There is a difference between normal worry and general anxiety and GAD. Normal worrying does not get in the way of daily activities. It is controllable. Even though it is unpleasant to a point it won’t cause significant stress and it is moved past. Normal worry is usually limited to a few small concerns and yet they are realistic concerns that can be worked through.

GAD is significant worry that disrupts, interrupts, and affects your daily activities and social life. This worry is uncontrollable and out of your grasp. You are extremely upset and stressed and it is all because of the worry you hold. You can’t help but to expect the worst out of every situation and this expands to all sorts of issues in your life. Do you worry so much and so often that it has been going on for over six months? This is GAD.

The usual signs are unsteadiness and jumpiness, muscle tension and aches, troubles sleeping, nausea and stomach troubles, tiring easily and restlessness. Irritability, feelings of dread, you just can’t relax, you can’t concentrate, you just can’t control the anxious thoughts they come out of nowhere and they won’t go away. This can be changed.

Self-help is highly effective with GAD and it can work if you are willing to sincerely try. Begin to challenge these irrational thoughts that come. Ask yourself if these thoughts are really possible, and most of the time, they are not. Learn to postpone worry and learn how to accept the uncertainty that is contained in life. It is helpful to remove any anxiety promoting lifestyle habits. Caffeine elimination, create an exercise regimen, revamp your diet, and gain support where you can including family and friends. Try developing and learning skills of relaxation. Spend 15 minutes to an hour in daily meditation and deep breathing. This is a brilliant way to create a safe-haven through your own mind. Do what you must to regain control of your thoughts. A healthy mind is within your control so take advantage of that strength through realization.
