Construction – Look for durable nylon and vinyl covers with thick PVC air bladders. Also, consider looking for mesh or other breathable materials that add coolness as well as strength to the surface. The surface should be able to survive rough treatment, and some are durable enough to survive punctures, or should at least be patchable.
Cost – On the other hand, consider cost. A float that lasts several summers is ideal, but if you're looking for something cheap that will get the job done (floating around), then keep it cheap. A good float should be available for less than $40, and less than $20 should last you at least a season.
Cupholders, Handles and Pockets – I'm a sucker for cupholders, and the more the better, but if cupholders can't be had, convenient handles and tie-ons make life easy to float coolers or other accessories, and water-tight pockets can hold your valuables, sunscreen and whatever else you need.
Reclining Seats – Some floats are just flat, some have built in pillows and some look like recliners on the sea! Consider what you're looking for before buying. If you want to people watch, you might want the recliner, but if you just want to sun you can get a flat float with a pillow.
Size and Passengers – Some floats are big enough for one, while others are big enough to float 2 or 3 people in sunning splendor. Others have molded seating for 2 or more passengers to allow you and friends to float in style.
Wild cards – Floats are getting high tech. Some have pockets, sure, but what about fancy models with their own coolers and ice chests? You want to sun yourself, but some have built in shades to keep you cool. If you're looking for an option, you can probably find it.
