Do’s:
· Be patient. Expect a mess. You can always clean up at the end. Teaching them to clean up the mess they make is also part of the training.
· Let your kids decide on the dish they wish to prepare.
· Help them to find a recipe that is easy to prepare. Smoothies, Milk shakes, decorating cup cakes, making little decorative eats with veggies and fruits. This is a good place to start.
· Get them a cook book with illustrations. It will help them to learn to follow a sequence.
· Take them out when you go grocery shopping, and help them to select the items they need for the choice they have made.
· Teach them the importance of good hygiene and cleanliness. The importance of washing their hands prior to preparing meals.
· Get them utensils that are unbreakable.
· Keep very sharp objects out of reach.
· Encourage and praise their work at all times.
· Give the kids responsibility.
· Encourage healthy eating, and teach them the importance of eating healthy.
· Sew an apron with their names on it; your little Chef will be thrilled!
· Have a separate set of kitchen tools for your kids, such as measuring spoons and cups set, pot holders, safety scissors, vegetable peeler, rubber spatula and a small cutting board.
· Have a drawer separately for your kid utensils.
Don’ts:
· Do not criticize. Guide them lovingly.
· Do not worry about the dish being perfect. We cannot expect the kids
cooking to be perfect.
· Do not keep dish towels and paper towels near the stove.
· Keep pot handles away from the kids when on the stove. It is best that the
stove is handled by only the Mom.
· Do not worry about the time the kids take over the preparation.
With the information given above, moms and kids can make their day spent in the kitchen memorable. Don’t forget to let them set the table!
