Transportation Engineering, Types of Jobs

The science of safe and efficient movement of people and transport is called transport engineering. Transportation engineers help in designing and maintaining all types of transportation facilities.

Highways and streets, mass transit systems, railroads, airfields and ports and harbors are some common facilities that are taken care of.

Transportation engineers put into use their technological knowledge to a great extent.

Understanding of the economic, political and social factors in their projects is the main criterion of transportation engineers. Since the quality of a community is directly related to the quality of the transportation system, transportation engineers must work directly with urban planners.

Some of the most common transportation jobs in relation to engineering are as follows:

Highway Engineering

Highway engineers take care of the planning, design, construction, and operation of highways and roads. They assess the transportation needs of the public. They also study locations of high traffic volumes and high collisions for capacity and safety. Moreover, they use civil engineering principles to improve the transportation system.

Railroad Engineering

Railway engineers take care of the design, construction, and operation of railroads and mass transit systems that use light rails or mono rails. Railway engineers determine horizontal and vertical alignment design of rails, station location and design, and construction cost estimating.

Port and Harbor Engineering

Port and Harbor engineers take care of the design, construction, and operation of ports, harbors and canals.

Airport Engineering

Airport engineers take care of the designing and construction of airports.
