No matter where people are having their parties, they will all try to make things as spectacularly chilling as possible. However, even with the huge variety of terrifying decorations, nothing creates the perfect atmosphere like fog, which is by far the most popular special effect. Unfortunately, fog machines have long been too expensive and impractical for most people to consider buying. So, many often resorted to using dry ice; but that, too, has several drawbacks. Besides requiring a lot of effort, it can also be costly and dangerous, as its direct contact with skin can cause tissue damage.
Luckily, over the past few years, fog machines have become way more affordable and easy-to-use. Now, with most machines, all you have to do is to pour a little fog fluid, which is usually a solution of glycol and water, into the machine, turn it on, and out comes fog. Many machines run in cycles, in which they cool down slightly for a bit, so the fog temporarily subsides, then heat up again.
If you’re going to buy one, and you want to make it as convenient and safe as possible, get one with a remote control, so that you can operate it from afar at an affair. This way, you can easily turn it off when it’s low on fluid, without abruptly leaving a conversation – or the food table. You can also get one with a timer that will turn it off before it runs dry, as its continued operation on empty can ruin the machine.
If you want to take it outside, make sure to get one that’s approved for outdoor use, as indoor-only machines may be damaged by rain or other types of moisture, including – ironically – fog. The larger the area that you want to cover, the bigger the machine you will need; and all units work best on calm nights, as wind plays havoc with fog. Put it under an overhang, or someplace else where it will be shielded from the elements, but set it on a fireproof surface, away from anything that may catch fire, as it will get hot.
If you’re using a machine indoors, it will probably leave residue on everything around it, so cover up – or keep it away from – your good furniture, electronics, and anything else that you don’t want sullied. It’s also important to keep rooms well-ventilated, and make sure that none of your guests have any breathing problems.
One more thing to remember when buying a fog machine is to make sure that it’s a name brand, as lesser-known companies may disappear, making it difficult to get the machine serviced, or even to find the right fog fluid for it next year. Now, that’s a really scary thought!
