The Volvo Yacht Race (previously known as the Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race) is the word on everyone's lips in Galway, as one of the most esteemed sporting challenges in the world will take in Galway city in its 2008/2009 race.
Galway city will be the spot light for this premier yacht race from 23rd May to the 6th June, 2009, when all eyes (approx 1.8 billion!) will be on Galway for the arrival and celebration of the spectacular yacht race.
The race will kick off on the 4th of October this year in Alicante, Spain. The first leg of the race will set sail from the port in Alicante on 11th of October 2008 and is expected to finish in St. Petersburg, Russia on the 27th June 2009.
Preparations have already begun in Galway with plans to transform the bay and docks. A raised platform will be constructed so spectators can watch the In-Port Racing and lots more.
There will also be a 'Race Village', open-air markets, street parades, cultural events and open-air concerts.
The Volvo Ocean Race is expected to be Ireland's biggest ever sporting/festival so far with Galway city expected to welcome over 300,000 people and generate approx €100 million in revenue over the course of the two weeks.
