Goddess worship was also prevalent in western society. Dancing formed a part of this worship and evidence can be seen for example in pagan rituals such as dancing around the Maypole. The Maypole has been attributed by some, as one of the origins of poledancing. Others say that its origins lie with travelling shows where dancers had to use the supporting poles to dance around. These shows were known as dance pole tents.
Exotic dancing has been recorded in ancient Egypt, Syria, and Turkey. Used as a form of entertainment in some cultures, for others it was a way to appease the gods. In Egypt, dances were performed for the fertility goddess Hathor and in Greece, Aphrodite. Even belly dancing is a form of exotic dancing that can be traced back to the Middle East and has been used as a form of entertainmentthroughout the ages and is still practised today.
Other forms of exotic dance were American burlesque and Paris had the Moulin Rouge. These were extremely popular and as before, have stood the test of time as shows can still be seen today. The Rumba was a dance of excitement; the Tango too was an erotic experience originating in Argentina.
The art of strip tease was introduced into the burlesque shows in and around the 1900’s where dancers would integrate it into their shows. Pole dancing however didn’t start to appear until the 1960’s and it wasn’t until the 1980’s that the first ‘modern’ pole dancing clubs were born in Canada. Canada even had the first champion pole dancer who started teaching the art to ladies from everyday life.
During the 1990’s, pole dancing, exotic dance and lap dancing began to spread across the world with clubs appearing in London and other major cities. Clubs dedicated to lap dancing and pole dancing started to open their doors too. Moving into the noughties, lap dancing has become widely accepted with clubs entering mainstream entertainment. Lap dancing in London for instance is now a large part of the going out experience.
It is now possible to take a gentleman’s night out at one of these establishments with entertainment being enjoyed by both sexes. Corporate events, special occasions in fact even just a night out in London can be enjoyed ina lap dancing club.
Exotic dance has had a stigma attached to it throughout history, which may offer an explanation to why it appears to have a limited documented history. Although it appears to have been an underground form of dance for many years, this has now changed with people across all sectors enjoying an evening in a lap dancing club.
