In the mid nineteenth century, the beauty and splendor of Mount Eliza, where Kings Park is situated, was threatened by increasing amounts of logging, until finally the special place the area could play in both the ecological balance and the history of the country was recognized, and it was set aside as a protected national park.
Kings Park acquired its royal name in 1901, six years after it was opened, when Princess Mary and the then Duke of Cornwall graced the park with their presence and to honor the coronation of King Edward VII. Till then, it was plain old Perth Park. The May Drive, in Kings Park, was named for Princess Mary.
