Prescription Drug Addiction – How Did It Get This Bad?

Every now and then we use new ideas, products or services to better our lives only to find out later that they’re dangerous. Asbestos, thalidomide and plastics (now the subject of many lawsuits) are a few examples. Many prescription drugs also fall into that category. We were told they were good for us, but they’re now ruining our lives with prescription drug addiction
, dependency, abuse, overdoses, illnesses and deaths. Behind this problem is the acceptance of an idea – and we may have made a big mistake.

While some drugs save lives, many more are prescribed for things that, years ago, were considered a normal part of life. And we addressed them without drugs.
If school wasn’t going well for our kids, if they fidgeted in class or were unable to grasp certain concepts, we found out what was troubling them or what the problem was with the school, the teacher or the subject and got them tutored, changed teachers or schools, or taught them how to deal with bullies or so-called friends that encouraged destructive behavior.

If our marriage was rocky, we talked it out. If we felt down about life, we had a good look at ourselves and our lives and tried to make changes. If we lost a loved one or got divorced, we coped with it until time made the wound a little less raw, and then we got on with life.

In recent decades, however, many of the normal reactions to situations experienced by 95% of the population have been redefined as ‘symptoms’ of the new ‘mental illnesses’ – now often called ‘disorders.’

Kids having trouble in school are now labeled mentally ill – they have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, attention deficit disorder, a learning disorder, and so on. If someone’s marriage is rocky and they’re losing sleep over it, they have a sleep disorder. If someone’s distraught over the loss of a loved one, an accident or threatening situation, they have post traumatic stress disorder. If they’re unhappy with their life, they have a depressive disorder.

And, as often as not, the solutions offered by the medical professionals we turn to for help are drugs they hope will relieve the symptoms, but which won’t cure the problem.

Instead, millions upon millions of people are now suffering from the common side effects of these drugs - reduced attention span, depressed heartbeat and breathing, mental confusion and physical unsteadiness and, if we take them for a while, aggressiveness, severe depression, a tolerance that makes them need more and more to get the same effect, prescription drug addiction and dependence, and severe withdrawal symptoms when we try to quit – which often causes us to keep taking them.

Our thoughts, emotions, attitudes and viewpoints are now controlled by stimulants, sedatives, tranquilizers, sleeping pills and antidepressants – all of which can lead to prescription drug addiction, dependency and abuse.

To make matters worse, many people also take additional drugs to help control the side effects of the first one. And many of the new drugs can also lead to prescription drug addiction or dependency.

Looking at life through this drug-induced haze, it’s next to impossible to actually resolve the issues we started with. Our brain power, insight, ability to communicate and all the other natural resources we use to address our problems are negatively affected by the drugs. So, it goes on and on.

What false ideas did we buy that led us into this mess?

Our normal reactions to everyday problems are actually illnesses.
It’s okay to diagnose someone with an ‘illness’ that has not been proven with the scientific method.
Treating a symptom is as good as treating the problem.

In reality, the list is much longer. Suffice it to say, we’ve been duped.

If you or someone you care about has a problem with prescription drug addiction, dependency or abuse, get out from under the misinformation and do a prescription drug rehab
program to get your life, your body, your brain, and your health back under your control.
