Can Mesotherapy Help You Lose Weight?

With all the procedures and treatments available for cosmetic removal of body fat, it is not surprising that at least one lays claim to being “all natural.” The substances in the injections used for mesotherapy are mostly vitamins, amino acids and plant extracts, rather than the chemicals or wave energy used in other non-invasive remedies. This method has been used for years in Europe, especially France, but only recently came to the U.S.

What makes mesotherapy effective, according to its proponents, is where it is injected. It is injected into the mesoderm, literally “middle skin.” The mesoderm is a layer of fat cells located just under the dermis, or inner skin. The ingredients used in the mesotherapy solution break down the fat in the mesoderm in order to sculpt and re-contour the body. Mesotherapy is said to work particularly well on cellulite, the dimpled fat that resides in the buttocks and thighs.

Among the benefits of mesotherapy are the fact that it is non-invasive - there is no cutting, burning or scraping - and the formula for the injection solution is created especially for each patient; it is also particularly successful in getting rid of cellulite. The treatment is practically painless and requires no recovery time.

Mesotherapy works by breaking down the fat in each cell, rather than by destroying or melting the cells, making it possible to target the exact area where you want the fat reduced (double chin, saddlebags, etc.). It also increases circulation and breaks down damaged connective tissue, resulting in a smoother appearance to the skin. These also are benefits of mesotherapy.

To get the benefits of mesotherapy, a series of injections is required, between five and fifteen, a week a part. Results may be seen after two or three sets of injections. The concentration here is not on weight loss (the procedure should probably not be on the obese), but on the redistribution of fat, or body sculpting. Tiny amounts of the mesotherapy medical “cocktail” are directed straight to the areas where reduction is desired, for example the thighs, “love handles,” buttocks and so forth, from every angle.

Treatments, which are administered in a doctor’s office, may need to be renewed every six months to a year. Side effects are generally mild and may include redness or bruising around the injection sites. Rarer but more serious are allergic reactions, infection and nausea.

If you are considering mesotherapy, remember that it is relatively new in the U.S. Be sure the doctor or practitioner you consult has been well trained so that you can receive all the benefits of mesotherapy.
