Most of us started playing for a certain reason. Sure, most guys want to impress girls - that’s a pretty good reason:-) Girls aside though, I bet it was the music and the sound of the guitar that made you pick up the instrument. We all had dreams of rockin’ out on stage and playing in front of huge crowds. It doesn’t take long to realize that in order to be able to do that you really need to put in a lot of time and effort to gain sufficient control of the instrument. A lot of people often ask themselves - will I ever be able to get good enough to play like my heroes?
This is where most fail. It seems nearly impossible to get that good. Surely my idols must have been blessed with extraordinary musical talent and natural abilities to play the instrument… The truth is you can get as good as you want, 90% of the pros are just everyday people like you and me. The difference is they didn’t give up on their dreams too early and were very consistent.
With proper guidance and dedication you really CAN become a master of the instrument. Here’s a short list of things you need to do:
1. Believe in yourself!
2. Practice systematically
3. Get organised! Follow a practice routine that covers everything you need to achieve your guitar goals (technique, theory, improvising, composition, ear training - you don’t have to focus on everything at once, choose what’s most important for you and gradually explore different areas as well) Check out my ” Free Guitar Lessons - How to Design Your Practice Routine? ” article for ideas.
4. Be ready to invest in your musical education - find a teacher or a mentor, buy books and courses if you need to. Be sure to check out my list of top 5 guitar products which will be posted soon.
5. Be patient - it does require years to become a good guitar player but the results are very rewarding.
I’m well aware that the above list is pretty general but the truth is that we’re all different and each of us requires slightly different advice. However, if you follow these basic rules, years from now you may realize that you finally are the player you always wanted to be…
