Think about the destination before you go try to consider the exchange rate. If one is not good now it is unlikely to improve massively before your holidays. Places to go include turkey, USA, morocco and the far east which all have a better exchange rate and in turn more for your money.
It is safer to carry travellers cheques than cash or you can try credit cards but don�t use these to draw out money, similarly check with your own bank before you depart to see how much they will charge for getting money out abroad. If you are carrying travellers cheques make sure you leave a copy of the serial numbers with a trusted family member or friend with the telephone number for the country you are staying in that you would need to call in the event of losing them or them being stolen.
Main banks and Post offices tend to change travellers cheques and most have ATMs. Most businesses, including shops and restaurants tent to prefer cash but major credit cards are often accepted in most.
If you can travel outside the school holidays even by a few days you can often save money on renting villas but also flight costs which will rise in summer holidays where demand is more.
If you live in the UK the government has tried to make it better for children by having school holidays start slightly earlier or finish slightly later so would it offset the cost to fly from a non local airport. The costs between Scotland and England can vary massively as their school holidays are quite different to each others.
