A migraine is a type of headache that causes intense, throbbing pain, usually on one side of the head. Patients may also experience nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light and sound. The symptoms can last from four to 72 hours and, in many cases, are very debilitating. About one-third of patients experience warning signs before the onset of a headache. This phenomenon, called an "aura," lasts for about 30 to 60 minutes. Signs can include visual disturbances (like flashes of light or zigzag lines), blind spots in the field of vision and numbness or tingling in the arms or face. The National Headache Foundation estimates 29.5 million Americans get migraines. The condition is about three times more common in women than in men. Sometimes migraines are triggered by factors such as exposure to light, changes in hormone levels (in women), eating certain foods, lack of sleep or missing a meal.

Now it may be possible to use magnets to repair some of the damage and slow the progression of the disease. In experiments on mice, US doctors looked at the effect of transcranial magnetic stimulation, or TMS, on the area of the brain involved in learning and memory. The technique, already being used experimentally to treat depression and schizophrenia and to rehabilitate stroke victims, uses a magnetic coil to stimulate the brains electric circuits.
While it is not clear exactly how it works, careful targeting allows over or under-active parts of the brain to be calmed down or jump-started.
