The Truth About Foods That Help Prevent Wrinkles

Are their foods that help prevent wrinkles? Some doctors and dermatologists think so. Others say that there is no scientific evidence to support the claims made by these doctors.

Most of the research that is being done has little to do with foods that prevent wrinkles. It has mostly to do with cancer prevention. According to the American Association of Dermatologists, the thing that causes one may also cause the other.

They have learned that aging skin cells produce more free radicals, which perform a few necessary functions in the human body, but if left unchecked, eventually they do a lot of damage to collagen, the cellular membrane and DNA strands. They cause chronic inflammation, which researchers believe is the root cause of chronic and life threatening conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

What does any of this have to do with preventing wrinkles? Some food contains large amounts of antioxidants, the key to keeping free radicals in check. Some doctors believe that food can either increase or decrease inflammation.

It's all theoretical, of course, but if there are foods that prevent wrinkles, they would also help prevent heart disease, diabetes and cancer. It is obvious that eating a healthy diet, maintaining an active lifestyle, drinking plenty of pure water and getting plenty of sleep can help you live longer. People who follow that kind of plan often look better, too.

But, some of the damage is done early on in life, as a result of overexposure to UV radiation from the sun. Eating certain foods cannot repair that damage. But, applying the key components of those foods directly to your face can.

There's no reason not to eat foods that help prevent wrinkles, but you can increase your likelihood of looking younger, longer, by using quality antioxidant rich creams and lotions on a daily basis. But, you have to remember that manufacturers of skincare products are not always 100% honest.

Technically speaking, artificial preservatives are antioxidants, since they prevent oxidation (spoilage) of the ingredients in the bottle. However, artificial preservatives are detrimental to your skin's health. They are known to cause allergic reactions and irritation. They may even play a role in cancer. The jury is still out on that point.

If you are not going to avoid artificial preservatives, then foods that prevent wrinkles are only going to counter the effects of those toxins. In fact, if you could avoid toxins entirely, the food would have more effect.

The problem is there are too many toxins in the environment to avoid them all. That's one of the reasons that wrinkle preventing foods will have little, if any, effect.

Most of the foods that prevent wrinkles, according to the doctors who suggest them, are vegetables. The ingredients to look for in lotions and creams are mostly vegetable oils, waxes and extracts.

So, it looks like the plant world gives us foods that help prevent wrinkles, as well as nutrients to apply directly. And, as long as we stay away from toxins like artificial preservatives, we should look better for life.
