Since NVIDIA first announced it had purchased PhysX, gamers have been waiting with anticipation for NVIDIA to release drivers to enable physics processing on the GPU. Today, NVIDIA finally delivered the drivers that enable PhysX physics processing on its high-end 8 series GeForce GPU's. NVIDIA says that its PhysX technology is already being used in more than 140 games shipping for the Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360, and Nintendo Wii.
NVIDIA says physics processing on NVIDIA GeForce 8(from: http://www.china-computer-accessories.com/buy-GeForce_/) series and higher GPUs is able to handle 10 to 20 times more visual complexity than what's possible on today's traditional PC platforms. NVIDIA also points out that its PhysX technology can leverage both the CPU and GPU architectures to deliver ultimate performance and an ideal end-user experience.
NVIDIA says 20 top-tier PC titles are expected to ship before the year-end holiday season for the PC that take advantage of PhysX technology on NVIDIA GPUs. With full games that take advantage of PhysX technology on the GPU not available at this time, NVIDIA has offered gamers a glimpse at what they'll get with full game titles with free software downloads.
NVIDIA has announced today a free GeForce Power Pack that includes several pieces of software that take advantage of PhysX processing -- including Warmonger, Unreal Tournament 3 PhysX map pack, a sneak peak at the upcoming Metal Knight Zero game that features a built-in benchmark, and NVIDIA's(from: http://www.china-computer-accessories.com/buy-NVIDIA/) all-new Fluid tech demo.
Warmonger is a particularly interesting piece of software that NVIDIA describes as a free, full game that allows gamers to destroy walls, floors, and entire buildings to open up new paths and close existing ones.
