This betwixt and between time can be the moment between night and day, light and dark, indoors and outdoors, one year and the next, even the gap between two paving stones. So, a practitioner may, at near-midnight (one) on New Year’s Eve (two) stand with one foot outside the front door in darkness, while the other foot is within a lighted room (three). In this example he or she is using three “betwixt and between” techniques simultaneously as he/she waits to see or hear and then interpret the first omen that manifests itself. It is the actual moment of midnight that is key here, a moment of magic and mystery when time stands still between two worlds and where anything that occurs at that moment, the omen, is of significance and meaning, whether it is an owl hooting, a shooting star or the sound of a firework.
Humanity itself is experiencing its own betwixt and between time in a way that is profoundly important for us as individuals and as a race, and for the planet. We are nearing the end of a 26000 year cycle which is known, esoterically, as the out-breath of God. At the start of the cycle, Earth was a place of great spirituality, where there was no aggression, no wars, only peace and love and beauty. It was a time when twelve Temples of Light stood as physical and metaphorical spiritual centres, their energies combining to cover every place on earth. It truly was the last Golden Age, it was Heaven on Earth.
However, all cycles come to an end eventually to be replaced by a counter-cycle, and as God began to exhale those 26000 years ago, Man was pushed further and further away from the world of spirit into the world of matter in order to experience and learn. Right now we are at the point where God is about to inhale, and that in-breath will start our recall to the Godhead, away from the world of matter back to the world of light. The in-
breath that is the new cycle will also last 26000 years, and will enable the re-building of the 12 Temples of Light on earth. Indeed, the work has begun already. When the Temples were destroyed by the encroaching darkness, the wisdoms, knowledge and power they symbolised were not lost: rather, they were stored within the DNA of those people who had created and maintained them as great spiritual centres, ready to be restored in the next great spiritual age. These ones are amongst us now, and the restoration of the Temples has begun.
The betwixt and between time between these two 26000 year cycles is 2012. Much has been written about the significance of that year, a lot of it apocalyptic. I do not subscribe to the negative theories that abound, but see that date as one to be anticipated with eagerness and celebration, as the time when the new golden era of spirituality truly begins. Because it is so close, we are in the betwixt and between time now, which is why so many extraordinary events and energetic changes are being experienced. We are moving into higher dimensions, moving away from the old cycle of self-centredness and aggression into the new which is resulting in some chaos and turmoil in the world. Many signs and signals are being offered to us in this time between cycles, omens as the shamans would say, and it serves us well to see every event that occurs to us, particularly those that are unexpected, as having a meaning or message to help us forward.
Because at this time we are as deeply engrossed in the world of matter as we ever have been, the furthest away from the Godhead, many people have forgotten their innate spiritual lineage and have separated from their spiritual source and connection choosing instead to focus on money, their appearance, power, materialism, and themselves. Society is selfish, and the prevalence of violence, sexual proclivity, addictions and greed in our culture demonstrates how trapped in a downwards materialistic cycle so many people have become. This is duality, when our Spirit is separated from what we are as humans. One-ness comes when we remember that we are soul and spirit working in harmony and perfect balance with our physical persona, and live it.
The Spiritual Law of Cyclical Return governs the working of cycles throughout the cosmos from the greatest to the comparatively insignificant, and they are evident in our lives and environment. However small it may seem, every cycle is an important part of the Great Plan of God, providing checks and balances, control and order, and without them there would be chaos, indeed there would be no life on earth as we know it. The rising and setting of the sun and moon, the seasons, the feminine menstrual cycle, the tides, are a necessary part of nature. Even our breathing has its own cycle, and the Wise Ones thousands of years ago knew how to use the breath to provide longevity, some of them living on earth for hundreds of years as a result of these techniques. Just as with the in-breath and out-breath of God, there is a mystical betwixt and between time at the beginning and end of each of our breaths: if when you meditate you pause gently between breathing in and breathing out for a moment you will sense peace and stillness as time stands still, and you will feel your connection with the divine.
Each of you has your own cycle of activity, and it is important to recognise and honour whatever the current rhythm of your life may be. There will be times when you are busy, times when you are quiet, and in many ways it is analogous with the rhythm of nature, whereby you will sowing seeds for the future at one time, watching them grow at another, then you will be harvesting the fruits and letting them nurture you, before your ground is dormant again waiting for the next cycle of seed-sowing. Sometimes you will feel energetic, purposeful, sociable, pleased to be busy and productive, but then the cycle will change and you will feel in hibernation mode, longing to be alone, to be living quietly and for any necessary activities to be gentle and unhurried.
As far as you can, be aware of the cycle you are in and adapt your life to allow it to express itself freely. Because of the expectations and societal belief patterns imposed on you by your culture and upbringing there is a tendency to feel guilty if you are not being busy and visibly energetic all the time – how often do you use or hear the words “I must” “I should”? Whenever you use them you are expressing guilt or obligation, and if you comply with it you are interfering with the natural rhythm of your cycle and creating an energy block which can be quite uncomfortable. Of course, the pressures of corporate
and family life are demanding but it is still possible, however difficult the circumstances, to make adjustments to your routine to be able to honour the particular phase you are in.
Cycles apply to your physical body also and It is helpful to ensure that it is in balance, always. There will be times when it benefits from a light diet, perhaps vegetarian, or from one with more protein, times when you need to drink more water than usual, or to give up caffeine for a while. Some people have a fixed idea of what is right for them to eat and adhere to a particular diet rigidly without recognising that, depending on their cycle, it may serve them to change it from time to time. It is easy to adapt a diet or lifestyle without compromising a particular belief system. So, listen to what your body is telling you and honour it as far as possible – even to the extent of eating when you are hungry rather than when the clock says it is time to eat.
Cycles apply to life and death also. Everything dies and is reborn, whether it is a plant, a table, our planet, our solar system or ourselves. Everything has its cycle of being in existence, then being destroyed to return to existence at some later time and you, reading this article, are in a cycle of reincarnation also. How and when and if you return to earth in body is not random, rather every human being has a well planned and finite round of experiencing living on earth, and within that round are many smaller cycles of learning.
You are on earth to learn what is to be human, to clear accrued negative karma and, from your actions and behaviour to increase the light of your soul – to expand your consciousness. The more light there is in you, the more you are living as Spirit, the more you are contributing to the sea of light which is God. As a soul, this is your dearest wish.
Every opportunity for you to learn and grow during your times on earth is given to you. You will reincarnate over a series of lifetimes, a cycle of a particular learning, to experience everything there is to know about, for example, power – how to use it wisely, how it can be abused, how it can cause suffering, how it is to be powerless. Some cycles can last many, many lifetimes and when you have learnt the lessons fully you are released to move to the next cycle of learning. When you are ready to graduate from earth school your need to reincarnate ceases and the cycle stops to be replaced by another almost invariably in the non-physical. Your soul is filled with light and you are working as Spirit. Some of you may choose to assist Earth and humanity still, but as a Master working from higher realms.
Because, as part of the arrangement for reincarnation, you are required to forget your spiritual lineage and past, it can be challenging to be thrown into the world of matter where pressures and temptation can be beguiling. Human experience means encountering the negative as well as the positive, and sometimes individuals can be caught up in a downward spiral of greed or self-obsession, for example. These ones always have the opportunity to learn that there is a wiser way of living, but often they are so entrenched in their established pattern they cannot find their way out of the darkness back to the light. This is why it is so challenging to be on earth, because it is possible to lose your way. However, the opportunities for soul growth are greater on earth than anywhere else in the solar system, and so the chance to have a cycle of living on earth is much sought after, particularly now as Earth moves towards becoming a sacred planet, with concomitant benefits for those amongst you who choose to move with Her.
So, how do you assist the expansion of your soul? It is by your actions and behaviour. Everything you think, say or do has a positive or a negative result. Judgment of others, selfishness, desire, corruption, gossip are like specks of dust on your soul, negative karma to be cleared. Remember, karma is the record of everything you have ever intended, thought, said or done. If you do your best, if you try genuinely to be loving, compassionate and kind, putting others before yourself, you are increasing the light of your soul and your consciousness expands. It is a simple truth but profoundly important.
It is time for this “new consciousness”, which underpinned the cycle of the last Golden Age of spirituality on earth, to return again as the foundation for the new cycle which is imminent. I encourage you, therefore, to celebrate this betwixt and between time for what it is, the bridge leading from the duality of separation to oneness with God.
