Besides a good review book the most important strategies for the ACT test is too understand the basic elements of test-taking. If you already know them then you can skim over this page and most likely the first twenty pages in your ACT exam review book. Otherwise if you can't recite the most important aspect of test taking learn this thoroughly.
Guessing
Most people on test are afraid to guess either because they don't want to get it wrong or because of a guessing penalty. FORGET that immediately. For the ACT guessing is good. There are no penalties and it can only gain you points for the ACT Especially in the grammar second section if you cannot figure it out just guess and try to eliminate one choice. Even if your a bad guesser if you guess five at least one of them are going to be right.
Pacing
On the exam all questions are worth the exact same value therefore the easy ones in the beginning are worth the same as the ones in the end. The first time I took the exam I rushed through it and missed a few easy ones in the beginning because of careless mistakes. DOn't make the same mistake I did just slow down and finish what you can realistically hit. Have a target score and stick to it don't try and do more it'll only hurt you. Always leave time to go back and check your answer I've seen more scores increase that way than any other ACT test strategies.
Showing Work
On the multiple choice I often see people write out every step and show all the work. I look and stare in disappointment. In a timed test you need every second and showing all the work is truthfully a waste of time. for tests its important that you do the bare minimum to complete the question. However that doesn't mean its okay to get careless and do everything in your head. It means to selectively write down what is necessary to complete the problem. Also its important to use the answers provided to find the answer. Don't try out the most complicated formula when the answer can just be plugged
in.
