What is Acne?

Acne is extremely common, in fact it is the major skin disorder suffered in the United States with 80% of people from 11 to 30 being afflicted, according to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases. Acne is an inflammatory skin disease caused by a disorder of the skin's pilosebaceous unit, which consists of a sebaceous (oil) gland and a pore containing a hair follicle.

Acne is NOT CAUSED by your diet – splurging on chocolate or living on take-away food - will not be a direct reason for a new outbreak. Poor hygiene or the wearing of makeup are also NOT direct causes of Acne. If you do already have acne though, poor diet and hygiene can make things worse.

Acne is a disorder which results from the combined action of hormones and other substances on the skin's sebaceous glands and hair follicles. Each hair follicle consists of a skin pore containing a tiny hair plus sebaceous glands, which produce an oily substance called sebum. When the body's chemistry is out of balance, excess sebum leads to the pores becoming plugged, resulting in the outbreak of localised inflammations commonly referred to as pimples or zits.

Since it is caused by imbalances and impurities within the body it is necessary to treat the problem via internal cleansing treatments that go direct to the source fighting acne before it even begins. Antioxidants help eliminate the free radicals that are dangerous to skin and promote infections, and these can be found in medications such as Acnezine. Be aware however that some of these can have side effects.

Acne is mainly considered a problem among teenagers, but a significant number of adults in their 30's and 40's still get acne. Whiteheads, blackheads, papules, pustules and pimples that are seen on the face, back, chest, shoulders and neck are all characteristic of Common Acne.

Acne is a multifaceted dermatological disorder of the sebaceous glands, which affects over 90% of adolescents with varying degrees of severity. Nodulocystic acne is the most severe form and has the potential of producing lifelong disfiguring scars. Particularly severe cases of Acne are often treated by dermatologists (doctors who specialize in skin problems). You should be aware that Acne is a health condition and needs to be treated as such. You should always seek the advice of your doctor if in doubt.
