1. Paid Advertising
A credit or debit card is needed whenever you want to place a paid ad.
Social networks as well as Search Engines earn their revenue through Paid advertising. Facebook allows you to place ads in its social network. Placing an ad is simply writing a few lines and placing an image if you have one. Other paid advertising networks include Adbrite, Bidvertiser, YSM, MSN and Adwords. Its not necessary to advertise in all the networks. Its better to 1st start with one network and grow from there. This involves tracking to see whether there are any sales originating from that paid advertising.
If you are a merchant, then you can place a tracking code to see if any sales has originated. Another method is to 1st build an email list for a specific landing page. So if you're building a campaign for say Adwords, then prospects are 1st directed to a landing page. Any sales that originates can be tracked not with tracking code but with cross referencing a name with a certain email campaign.
2. Search Engine Optimisation
Developing organic traffic takes time and its not 100% full proof that your site will be on the 1st page of Google. A simple strategy is to have a landing page on the 1st page of your domain and a blog on subsequent pages. That way, you can capture visitors to your site before they access your blog. A blog can be created either by wordpress or blogger is quickly indexed by Google as well.
From my 4 years online experience in affiliate marketing, the fastest way to generate traffic and earn a full time income online is to send Pay Per Click marketing traffic to a landing page and promote a recurring product. That way, PPC cost is quickly covered and the continual membership fees will earn a healthy profit by the 2nd month.
