Any filter may be better than no filter at all, but why buy drinking water filters that only block chlorine, when, for the same price, you can get one that blocks chemicals, lead and bacteria, as well as chlorine?
Smart shoppers always want to get more for their money. A drinking water filter is just like anything else - there are good, better and best buys.
Now, that’s not to say that the most expensive drinking water filters are the best. Right now, the drinking water filter with the highest price tag is the reverse osmosis unit. While it was popular at one time, experts now feel that the de-mineralized water is not good for your health.
Plus, it won’t block chlorine or any chemical lighter than water (which most of them are).
Skeptics are claiming that drinking water filter companies are using scare tactics to get people to buy their products. They say that statements about chemical and biological contamination in public water sources are overblown or false.
The truth is that government organizations and environmental groups are the ones making the statements. It’s doubtful that Washington Post reporters are selling drinking water filters on the side. There are problems with public tap water; there is no doubt about that.
It is possible that disreputable drinking water filter companies are cashing in on their competitor’s reputations. But, all of the top rated companies for drinking water filters have been in business for quite some time.
If you sell inferior products, you want to get “in and out” quickly. In other words, the “bad” drinking water filter companies would want their products on home shopping network.
They want to sell all that they have and then they want to close up shop, before too many people complain. Those drinking water filters will not address the many problems we have with our water today.
Here’s what the experts are saying we need to worry about:
- The amount of chlorine in tap water is unsafe to swim in. Most drinking water filters remove chlorine, but only some remove lead, which has been found in the drinking water of many cities and in many homes around the country, where the residents ordered testing.
- Drugs and hormones have been found in the water supplies of many metropolitan areas. Treatment facilities are not equipped to break them down and remove them.
- They cannot guarantee the absence of cryptosporidium cysts, either. If ingested, the parasites can cause life threatening illnesses.
A drinking water filter must have the ability to block micron-sized contaminants to address these issues.
Basically, anything that is found anywhere in the environment eventually ends up in the water. That includes pesticides, herbicides, industrial solvents, gasoline additives... and the list goes on.
Only the highest quality drinking water filters are certified to remove everything that people have put into the water. Do yourself a favor - it’s worth your time to shop for the best.
