When setting goals, focus on your action instead of the results.
I don’t mean that you should ignore the desired results. After all, this is the fuel that drives the fire. When you see yourself strong and muscular in your mind’s eye, this gives you the proper motivation to go on ahead and reach your goal. Obviously you have to think about your target, since that is the whole purpose of setting goals in the first place.
However, you should understand that certain things are outside of your control. If your goal is to build 20 pounds of muscle within a certain amount of time, that may be an achievable goal. Nevertheless, you cannot control every biological reaction or mechanism that controls muscle growth. Ultimately, you can only control your own actions.
By all means decide on what outcome you would like to achieve. But then focus on and write down what actions you will take on a daily basis to get there. Commit yourself to lifting a certain amount of weight twice a week or eating a certain number of calories each day. Your actions are what you can control, and these will ultimately get you to your desired destination (or as close as possible in your situation).
